Literature typically refers to writings considered to be an art form including fiction, drama and poetry. It also includes works in various non-fiction genres such as autobiography, diaries, memoir, letters and essays. Literature is deeply rooted in our culture. To a large extent, it influences our values, the way we think and interact people, and the roles we play in society and politics. It is not an exaggeration to say that one cannot understand any culture without studying the literature.
The English Literature Study at 5D College is aimed to expose the richness and diversity of English literature to students. The selection of the material is to broaden the scope of English study which students experience in normal schools as part of the national curriculum, and deepen students’ understanding of the beauty of English and the connection between classic works. For example, by studying Greek mythology, students would be able to better understand Shakespeare.
Shakespeare is the father of “modern English”. Almost all the English figurative language that we know and use every day was created by Shakespeare. Therefore, Shakespeare’s works have remained as a core theme of the English Literature Study at 5D College. Learning and understanding what he wrote can make us masters of English, and enable us to express ourselves eloquently, and in a sophisticated manner when required. In addition, this course also covers a range of other classics of English literature to cater for the old and the young.
The course is delivered in a variety of ways including introduction to the historic background, plot and text analysis, practice with important quotes, phrases and words, guided debates between students, and a short video to capture the essence of the chapters.
